Ocean's Alive at the MSUM Oceanarium

We're going back to the MSUM Oceanarium! Due to the very long waiting list of kids registered for our previous visit in June, we've arranged for another visit on August 3. Families with children on the waiting list have been contacted, and those still interested have been registered, but we still have spots available! Join us for this up-close peek at some unusual sea creatures!

You wouldn't want to play games with a horseshoe crab – but have you ever touched one? Now you can! You won't have to travel far to get up close and personal with some of these ocean dwellers when we visit the MSUM Oceanarium. Stingrays, seahorses, clownfish, and lionfish are just a few of the other Oceanarium residents. Kids ages 12 and younger are invited to join us for one of three sessions on the campus of MSUM. Pre-registration is required.

Fargo Cass Public Health will host a Flu Shot Friday event on Friday, October 28. Flu shots will be provided on a walk-in basis from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the main FCPH building, located at 1240 25th Street South, Fargo. Follow outdoor signage to the WEST door of the main building for entrance to the clinic; indoor signage will provide further direction.

According to Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The first and most important step in preventing flu is to get a flu vaccine each year. Flu vaccine has been shown to reduce flu related illnesses and the risk of serious flu complications that can result in hospitalization or even death.

Flu Shot Friday Walk-In Clinic

FCPH will hold an additional walk-in flu shot clinic on Friday, November 20, from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Appointments are not required but residents are asked to complete registration ahead of time by visiting the North Dakota Vaccination Registration Website and selecting ‘Find a Vaccination Clinic’. Flu shots will be available for anyone age 6 months and older. High dose vaccine is available for residents age 65 and older. The flu shot clinic will take place at FCPH, located at 1240 25th Street South in Fargo. Those who wish to receive a flu shot should bring Medicare or health insurance information to the clinic.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends getting a flu shot at any time during flu season. Receiving an annual flu shot is the best protection against the influenza virus and can reduce flu illnesses, doctor visits and missed work and school due to flu.

Residents are asked to adhere to COVID-19 prevention protocols that will be in place during the flu shot clinic. Those measures include wearing a mask while in the building, maintaining physical distance while waiting in line, utilizing separate entrance/exit doors and staying home if not feeling well.

Fargo Cass Public Health will hold a flu shot clinic on Friday, November 30, from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. This event is open to the public. Flu shots will be available for anyone age 6 months and older.

According to the Cass County Coroner, there were nine deaths in 2015 due to opioid overdose in Cass County. In 2016, there were 31 deaths; in 2017, there were 17 deaths and in 2018, there have been five deaths to date. Fargo Cass Public Health recognizes the need for expanded awareness, education and access to naloxone (NARCAN®), due to the high number of opioid-related overdose deaths in the community and the nation.

As the first and only FDA-approved naloxone nasal spray, NARCAN® Nasal Spray provides a ready-to-use opioid overdose emergency treatment. NARCAN® Nasal Spray is not a substitute for emergency medical care, and repeat applications may be necessary. Seek emergency medical assistance immediately, and keep the patient under continued surveillance.

The Mayors’ Blue Ribbon Commission on Addiction will host another Take Back Tuesday event on Tuesday, August 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. The event will take place on the sidewalk outside the main entrance of Fargo Cass Public Health, located at 1240 25th Street South in Fargo.

The Take Back event will allow area residents to properly dispose of unused and unwanted over-the-counter and prescription medications, thereby helping protect the environment and prevent drug diversion and misuse. Take Back programs are also a strategy to help combat the opioid epidemic.

The first Take Back Event of 2018 took place on June 19 at Fargo Cass Public Health and generated 143 pounds of medications from 110 participants.

The following items will be accepted at the Take Back event:
* Unused or expired prescriptions and over-the-counter medications, including:
* Pills, tablets, caplets (remove product from the packaging)
* Inhalers, nebulizer solutions, liquids and creams (leave in the original container)
* Controlled substances
* Pain relief such as Vicodin, Hydrocodone, Demerol, OxyContin, fentanyl, etc.
* Anti-depressants such as Valium, Zoloft, Prozac, etc.
* Sleep aids, such as Ambien, Lunesta, Sonata, etc.

The following items will not be accepted at this Take Back event:
* Sharps (syringes, lancets), thermometers, glass, home-based care (HBC) or durable medical equipment (DME) supplies, and pharmacy inventory. Residents are encouraged to ask their pharmacists where to safely dispose of these items.

The Take Back program was launched in December 2009. North Dakota now offers two free programs for residents to dispose of unwanted medications – the Take Back program at participating law enforcement agencies and the MedSafe program at participating pharmacies. North Dakota is the only state in the nation operating free, year-round, statewide prescription drug disposal programs at local law enforcement agencies and pharmacies. The Take Back event will allow area residents to dispose of unused and unwanted over-the-counter and prescription medicines, thereby helping to protect the environment and keeping these drugs off the streets. These types of events work to combat the opioid epidemic in the metro community.

The first Take Back Event took place in June 2017 at Fargo Cass Public Health and generated 210 pounds of medications from 133 participants.

The following items will be accepted at the Take Back event:
• Unused or expired prescriptions and over-the-counter medications, including:
• Pills, tablets, caplets (remove product from the packaging)

Fargo Cass Public Health will host a press conference on Thursday, April 5th at 10 a.m. in the Oak Room. The press conference will announce a new campaign, which promotes the balance of breastfeeding for working mothers and their employers, business incentives for businesses interested in becoming Infant Friendly Workplaces and free classes for new mothers.

Speakers will include Fargo Mayor Dr. Tim Mahoney, a representative from an Infant Friendly Business, the Breastfeeding Coordinator at Fargo Cass Public Health and a mother who has returned to work while still breastfeeding.

The event will also include a short tour for media entities interested in seeing a Nursing Mother’s Room that gives mothers space to breastfeed or pump breastmilk at work.

The Heart-n-Soul Community Café will be serving supper March 19th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Chef Chris Olson will be preparing breakfast for dinner!

Chef Chris will serve frittata, an egg-based Italian dish similar to a crustless quiche or omelet, along with a fresh green salad and mixed fruit. Banana bread and ice cream will be served for dessert.

The suggested price is $7 but guests are encouraged to pay what they are able. Everyone is welcome. Guests can also volunteer in exchange for a meal or pay it forward to help a neighbor in need.

From cyber-bulling to inappropriate web content, being able to contact strangers, and applications disguised to function in a different way are some of the dangers for impressionable kids using a smartphone.

Bed Bug Seminar

The seminars will take place at Fargo Cass Public Health, 1240 25th Street South, Fargo and are scheduled for 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 pm. The seminars are intended to provide community education and awareness on the topic of bed bugs. The presenter is a subject matter expert with over 10 years of experience as a licensed pest control exterminator. Bed bug infestations in the U.S. have been on the rise since the mid-90s, thanks to an increasingly mobile population and the bugs growing resistance to pesticides.

Fargo Cass Public Health is offering another Flu Shot Friday event. This flu clinic is open to all City and County employees, their spouses and the general public ages 18 and up.

Why: Anyone can get the flu. Flu strikes suddenly and can last several days. Each year thousands of people in the United States die from flu, and many more are hospitalized.

On November 15, 2017, Fargo Cass Public Health will host a 'Heart-N-Soul' Community Cafe, in conjunction with Homeless and Hungry Awareness Week. This event is open to the public and encourages community members to join one another for a meal. Beat the fall temps with a meal of hot chili, salad and dessert!

At the Community Café, all are welcome no matter your means. The idea of the Community Café is to end hunger & food insecurity in the Fargo-Moorhead area by providing healthy, local (when possible) and delicious food to all who walk through our door. All patrons are welcome and will be served in a respectful and dignified manner, regardless of their ability to pay.

The suggested donation is $7, or any amount guests are able to pay.

Stepping On Workshop
